VANCOUVER
Dear friends
!00 anti-rape activists from Canadian rape crisis centers will be
gathered in Vancouver along with 50 more feminist allies April 25 26
27. On Wednesday 27th we will meet in the Wosk Center for dialogue
of Simon Fraser University. Our deliberations will focus on the rape
issues of our day: the promotion of prostitution, the impoverishment
of the women of the world, the targeting for violence of aboriginal
women, the abdication of government responsibility to assist women
against the violent repression we experience.

Andrea Dworkin was a great ally to us. As recently as 5 years ago
Andrea came to Vancouver to take to the streets with us at Take Back
the Night. Many of us remember with chills her speech at both the
first and second Banff conferences. At the second she answered to a
question about counselling that it was our obligation to get between
the woman and the man abusing her no matter what it took: words law
or guns.
Our meeting will be webcast and available through www.casac.ca We
will carry into it the tributes to Andrea we have received through
catw-l. Please carry a message of our tribute into your events
Many of us anti-violence workers experienced her as our first
political/feminist poet. Through the years she seemed to (maybe even
involuntarily) embody the movement of the second wave. When we were
building/discovering a new idea she could express it, when we
experimented with personal adaptation to life she did too, when we
stumbled as a movement, she articulated why, when we doubted
ourselves she brought the doubts into the light for examination. She
always seemed to me exactly in step with the movement as a whole and
able to reflect the ideas of that movement back to us before we were
fully conscious. We anticipate celebration of her achievement and
expressions of gratitude for the voice she gave to our worst
knowledge and our best hopes. To have " I want a 24 hr Truce" from
her was a great gift of hope and vision crafted from the horrible
reality so likely to cause despair.
We loved her and share this loss with you
